Italian Argentina
The statue of Romulus and Remus with their wolf mother made me double back just to make sure, after all San Carlos de Bariloche is a long ways from Rome. However, when you consider that 60% of Argentinians can claim some Italian descent making it the largest immigrant group to Argentina, exceeding Spain. Logically, Italian could have been the dominant language of Argentina, however few immigrants spoke a standardized Italian but regional dialects. But Italian heavily influences the rhythm and tone of a distinctive Argentinian Spanish. Also, a distinctive slang, Lunfardo, can make Argentinian Spanish unintelligible to even native Spanish speakers. Aside from the habit of adding endings to words that make them sound Italian. Susan and Matt are enjoying travel in a Latin American country where they do not stick out physically and feels closer to Europe than North America. But their Mexican/Central American Spanish is not proving that util. The following song is a classic Tango primer for Lunfardo.
